The third largest domestic airline in India with a market share of 13%, Air India operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft that service 90 routes both within India and Internationally. The company is a member of Star Alliance airlines. Originally founded a TATA airlines in 1932, making it one of the longest-serving airlines in the world. After WW2, when commercial services were restored to India, the company rebranded into the commercial passenger service we know today. In 1960, it became the first Asian company to incorporate a Jet plane into its fleet and 2 years later became the world's first all-jet airline. In October 2016, the company began operating the world's longest non-stop flights from Delhi to San Francisco.
Air India currently operates 2 subsidiary companies within India, with its headquarters based in the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The service covers 89 destinations in 27 countries across 4 continents around the world, and the company currently employs over 21,000 people. With a massive fleet of over 116 planes, flights on international and domestic routes are serviced by Airbuses and Boeings.
Flying with Air India
Passengers flying in economy class can enjoy in-flight entertainment with common, well-placed movie screens. There is a choice of continental or Indian meals, both with meat and vegetarian options as well as complimentary beer and wine on flights over 90 minutes.
In executive class, leisure travellers are offered spacious cabins and plush seats, which are placed in rows of 2 so everyone has either an aisle or a window seat. Passengers also have access to priority check-in and the VIP lounge before boarding.
First-class Air India facilities offer a truly luxurious experience. With seats that fully recline to a sleeping position, with plenty of privacy as well as cocktails, canapes and a wide selection of 5-star food.
Practical Information
When checking-in before flights, passengers can either do so at the departure airport or online. Online check-in opens 48 hours before the flight and closes 2 hours before departure. You can either print off your boarding pass or download to your smartphone to avoid lines and delays at the airport.
Luggage:
- For economy, executive and first class, check baggage limits are 25 kg, 35 kg and 50 kg respectively.
- Hand luggage must weigh less than 8 kg and have total dimensions of less than 110 cm
- Musical instruments, sporting equipment and assistive devices can all be brought on board for an extra fee.
