Austrian Airlines, often shortened to "Austrian", is a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group and the flag carrier of Austria. The airline's headquarters are located in the grounds of Vienna International Airport in Schwechat. Formed in 1957 by the merger between Austrian Airways and Air Austria, the airline traces its history back to 1923, when Austrian Airways was established. Throughout the 2000s, the airline expanded through the acquisitions of Rheintalflug and Lauda Air and took on the name shortened "Austrian" name in 2003. In March 2012, Lufthansa invested 140 million Euros into Austrian to allow the airline to undergo a structural reorganisation and in July 2012, the Lauda Air subsidiary was merged into Austrian Airlines. AUA operations were taken over by the subsidiary group Tyrolean Airways in April 2012. After this date, all of Austrian's flight were operated by Tyrolean. In 2013, the airline's 11 Boeing 737 aircraft were replaced by a new group of seven Airbus A320s, and in 2015, Fokker 70s and 100s aircraft were replaced with Embraer 195s. Today, the airline has a fleet size of 88 aircraft and flies to destinations around the globe. In 2016, 11.4 million passengers flew with Austrian Airlines.

Owing to their partnership with Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines is now part of the largest airline company in Europe. Customers will benefit from this status with a large network of destinations around the world. The airline is now a market leader in both Central and Eastern Europe, linking Vienna with more than 40 destinations in these areas. Passengers can benefit from great-value flights to many of the main economic and business centres in Central Eastern Europe, as well as many important tourist destinations. The airline offers a frequent-flyer programme called Miles and More, offering customers exclusive privileges both for everyday life and while travelling.
Check-in: It is possible for passengers to check-in online and obtain an e-boarding pass that can either be printed or sent to your personal mobile device. If you need to check-in luggage, you may present your boarding pass at one of the baggage drop-off counters in Terminal 3 at Vienna International Airport. Austrian Airlines offer the Austrian App to allow passengers to check-in quicker and manage seating online prior to their flight, as well as request additional services such as upgrades to Business Class and extra legroom.
Luggage:
Economy Class passengers are permitted 1 piece of carry-on baggage of no more than 8 kg and Business Class passengers are permitted 2 pieces of carry-on baggage of no more than 8 kg each. The maximum measurements of each piece of carry-on luggage are 55 x 40 x 23 cm.
A foldable garment bag with dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm is also considered as carry-on baggage. In addition to your carry-on baggage you are permitted to bring one personal item with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 10 cm into the passenger cabin, for example a handbag, shoulder bag or laptop bag.
