MIAT Mongolian Airlines - Travel With Mongolian Flare
MIAT Mongolian Airlines is the national carrier in Mongolia. Located in Ulaanbaatar, the airline operates scheduled international flights and chartered domestic flights from its base at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. MIAT has been in existence since 1956. During the communist era, the company was assisted in operations by Aeroflot and started with one flight from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk. During the 1960s and 1970s, the airline obtained more modern aircraft. In July 2008, MIAT suspended domestic flights but in 2009 resumed domestic flights to Mörön and Khovd using the Boeing 737-800 aircraft. In 2009 the carrier flew charter flights to Hong Kong and the Sanya resort city.
In 2011 MIAT Mongolian Airlines purchased new, more modern Boeing aircraft and began regular flights to Hong Kong. Currently, the company shares its operational tasks with Aeroflot, Korean Air and Cathay Pacific. This code sharing agreement means that passengers now have wider access to many more flights and destinations. This improves service delivery for both airlines and means that customers have access to far flung destinations such as Australia and Singapore via Hong Kong. The agreement expands routes for both airlines and creates better tourism and commerce opportunities between the Asia Pacific region and Mongolia. The airline currently operates four Boeing aircraft.
