Nepal Airlines - Nepal's Carrier
In July 1958, the Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation was established as Nepal's first commercial passenger airline. It operated with a single Douglas DC-3 aircraft from the base at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport. From there, with assistance through aid programs due to Nepal's unique political and geographical position, new aircaft were added and the company expanded flights into India and Pakistan. Chinese aircraft, Russian planes, and 2 helicopters made up the fleet in the 1960s and 70s. By the 1980s most of the country's 180,000 tourists were arriving by air but there was increasing competition from several different Indian airlines.
To meet this competition head on, the company entered the jet-age of flying by offering flights to Hong Kong using a Boeing 757 and by the late 1980s the company was the country's largest local employer, bringing in more foreign currency than any other government agency. By 1988, Royal Nepal Airlines was connecting over 58 domestic and 10 international destinations.
In 2004, the Nepalese government sold it's stake in the company, providing a capital boost. Since adding Airbuses to it's fleet, Nepal Airlines has undergone extensive rebranding and advertising, leading to a 20 percent increase in customers each year since 2015. They now employ 2,500 people and fly to eight countries across Asia and 25 destinations within Nepal.
