Introducing Morocco's National Airline, Royal Air Maroc

When Morocco's Air Atlas and Air Maroc came together in the early 1950s, the merger would ultimately lead to the creation of Royal Air Maroc in 1957. With its headquarters in Casablanca at Mohammed V International Airport, the airline is the pride of Morocco, the largest in the country, fully government owned, and one of the most innovative on the African continent. For example, Royal Air Maroc was the first African airline to fly the Boeing 757, introducing the plane with a flight from Seattle to Casablanca in 1986.

Morocco's national airline, most commonly referred to as RAM, began operations with a fleet of 15 planes, initially serving destinations in France and North Africa. The connection with France has remained strong ever since, with the airline flying to several destinations across the country and the French-speaking world.

The first Boeing jet was acquired in 1969 as the company's destination network spread further. Currently, the international fleet comprises 54 aircraft, the majority of which are Boeing 737 Airbuses. International flights, provided by five long-haul planes, cover North America, Brazil and West and Central Africa. The company's 30 medium-haul planes serve the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, neighbouring North African countries, and Europe. Given Morocco's significant Muslim population, the airline is a regular carrier of flights to the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

With increased competition from low-budget airlines on short-haul routes, along with the general pattern in modern aviation, Royal Air Maroc operates co-share agreements with a selection of European, Middle Eastern, and African airlines on selected routes.

Flying With Royal Air Maroc

As a modern, international airline with a diverse customer base, the company offers flights in Economy and Business Class, and a frequent flyer programme with numerous benefits.

In Business Class, passengers can relax in leather seats which recline into a bed position, each with a massage function for extra comfort. The premium includes two meals that reflect Moroccan culture and cuisine, served on fine bone china, and a cloakroom service.

For Economy Class, passengers are treated to a full entertainment roster on 8.9-inch seat back screens, and two in-flight meals on flights longer than two and half hours.

With the frequent flyer program, called Safar Flyer, regular passengers can upgrade to Business Class and enjoy an excess luggage allowance, among other benefits.

Practical Information

Check-in procedures conform to modern international standards on Royal Air Maroc. Passengers can use a self-service check-in facility with an e-ticket, or priority check-in for Business Class and Safar Flyers. All close 60 minutes before flight departure.

Likewise, the luggage allowance is consistent with most medium- to long-haul carriers. Passengers can take:
One piece of cabin luggage up to 10 kg and no bigger than 115 cm along any side.
A laptop in addition to their cabin bag
Two pieces of checked baggage, with restrictions according to the destination, up to a maximum of 32 kg and 203 cm.

Before the flight, Business Class passengers can use the Royal Air Maroc lounge to relax, with snacks and business services available.
